A lamp post in West Cape May with woolen coatMove over Banksy, there is another guerrilla street artist in town and they're armed with knitting needles.

The US state of New Jersey lives up to its name as its trees and lamp posts are being clothed in brightly coloured knitwear in the dead of night.

But who is this crafty artist?

Dubbed "The Midnight Knitter", the mysterious hero of all things woolen acts only under cover of darkness.

And though residents of West Cape May have confessed that the newly-adorned posts and branches brighten their day, the police have been called in to uncover the culprit.

Mayor Pam Kaithern told local rag The Press of Atlantic City: "We don't know who it is. Technically, they shouldn't be doing it.
"The police are asking about it, but it's fun and it's a mystery."

Mind you, Mayor Kaithern seems to be secretly hoping that the Midnight Knitter will remain unfound, adding: "Let's keep it a mystery."

Guerilla knitting is something of a new phenomenon with cities around the world already seeing an increasing number of wool-clad street furniture.

For this particular knitter (or knitters), however, all the added attention is making things harder.

On their Facebook page, 'Salty Knits' as they are called, revealed: "Today has been so crazy. Now we have to figure out how to put new tags up without being spotted!"
