A generation ago, it was more likely for men to have control of the family finances - paying the bills and keeping track of the savings accounts - and giving his wife housekeeping money for the week.

Not so any more. According to new research, women today are more likely to take charge of household finances, as they are better at managing money.

Apparently, women are better at budgeting and keeping track of their spending and are less likely to build up debt on a credit card or a loan.

And when things do go wrong, women are less likely to bury their head in the sand and hope those pestering calls from the debt collecting company will simply go away.

"For years, women have been thought of as the big spenders, splashing their cash on clothes and shoes, said Ed Bowsher of lovemoney.com.

"But it seems men are gaining their own reputation when it comes to managing their finances while women are learning how to handle their money."

The study of 3,000 people in the UK found that men owe an average £2,176 on their credit cards compared to £1,987 for women.

Worrying, one in 20 men admitted that they had absolutely no idea about the family finances, always overspend and regularly forget to pay the bills.

"It's sad to see that both sexes are carrying so much debt on their credit cards," Mr Bowsher said. "The best way to reduce your debt is to budget carefully and monitor your spending on a regular basis."

Or, you could always hand over your money to us women, and we'll give you a weekly allowance to spend.
