Forget complex eating regimes and confusing diet plans. According to the latest research a few simple tweaks to your daily diet are all that is needed to make a big impact on your health.Scientists at Oxford and Liverpool Universities calculated the impact of lower cholesterol and blood pressure from making tiny adjustments to our diets.
The study revealed that up to 21,360 lives would be saved every year if Britons adjusted their diets to eat just one gram less of salt a day, one extra piece of fruit or portion of vegetables and got a mere one per cent more of their energy intake from unsaturated fats, rather than saturated or trans fats.
But don't get carried away at the greengrocer's. While it's important to get your five a day, too much fruit can play havoc with your waistline. It may be packed with vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants but it's also loaded with sugar. Dr Carel Le Roux, consultant in metabolic medicine at Imperial College London told The Daily Mail:
'Different people over-eat different things,' he says. 'But the people who eat fruit to excess are often weight-conscious. I've seen patients who can't understand their obesity because they eat healthily, then it turns out they are eating way too much fruit or drinking fruit smoothies all day - glugging down 300 calories in a couple of minutes.'
