But for one German woman, her battery-powered pal was the source of some serious embarrassment.

The woman, from Bochum in western Germany, became concerned over a loud noise in her home.

Fearing an intruder was rummaging through her personal belongings, she called the emergency services, who could hear the racket over the phone.

When police arrived, however, it didn't take them long to uncover the culprit.

According to AFP news agency, the police statement said: "Daringly, and with the occupier's permission, one of the officers opened the drawer of a wardrobe where the noise was coming from.

"Underneath some clothes he found a very personal, battery-operated object which had obviously switched itself on... The tenant's face abruptly changed colour."

The police officers reportedly wished the woman a pleasant evening and left, no doubt with broad smiles.

We're guessing the woman swiftly removed the batteries.
