Young woman applying liplinerSome of us believe in love at first sight, others in soul mates. But according to a new book, if you're looking for Mr Right the answer could lie in science.

The Daily Mail has revealed extracts of Andrew Trees' latest book, Decoding Love, which takes the wealth of scientific research and statistics available and puts it into a reader-friendly series of clues to the finding (and keeping) your perfect man.

For example, in the confusing world of flirting, previous studies have shown that being overly forward is a definite no-no – it's all about being subtle.

However, the number of signals required for a significant response from men may just mean that subtlety goes out the window – apparently 35 smiles and glances does the trick (though you may find yourself stuck with a permanent grin).

Lipstick is always a winner. According to Mr Trees, first impressions really count where men are concerned and their attraction to women has been proven to be higher when she donned the lippy.

Be careful on the dance floor though. A study by psychologist Geoffrey Miller, from the University of New Mexico, found that your sexy moves may only catch a man's eye at certain times of the month.

Hit the dance floor when you are at your most fertile (when ovulating) and the boys will apparently be falling over themselves to be near you.

And finally, never talk about your weight or latest fad diet when out on a dinner date – 45 per cent of men considered it a turn-off.

Decoding Love by Andrew Trees is available priced at £8.99
