Middle-aged woman looking in mirrorEver wondered why your reflection in the mirror reveals all the ravages of time, while your best pal retains a baby-faced youthful appearance?

Well, you may want to think twice before splashing out on the latest celebrity-endorsed miracle cream as scientists say it's all in the genes.

Researchers from the University of Leicester and King's College London have discovered the genetic link to ageing which could explain why some remain eternally youthful while others show the full signs of ageing.

Having studied the DNA of over 12,000 people, the scientists identified one stretch of DNA that sped up the ageing process.

Apparently, around 7 per cent of the population has two copies of this DNA strand and it could mean they look up to eight years older than their same-age counterparts.

A further 38 per cent have one copy, leaving them looking three to four years older.

A particularly lucky 55 per cent do not have the same problem. Instead, they are blessed with two copies of the "Peter Pan" gene, giving them that youthful, smooth-skinned appearance.

For the rest of us though, the search for a real anti-wrinkle miracle continues.
