It is no secret that women carry their lives in their handbags and in recent years that has meant a heavy burden. But these days the weight is coming off our shoulders and it is technology that we have to thank for lightening the load.
Smartphones and tiny MP3 players are making life easier in more ways than one and, as our belongings get smaller and smaller, so too do the vessels necessary to cart them around.
The average bag now weighs just 3lb and 5oz – and that's 57 per cent less than the average two years ago.
A spokesman for Debenhams, which carried out the research, told the Daily Mail: "The new generation of smaller, lighter multipurpose gadgets such as the iPhone and Blackberry have replaced heavy laptops, old-fashioned mobile phones and Filofaxes."
Back in 2006 we ladies were lugging a weighty 7lb 11oz around so it is no wonder that handbags began expanding to accommodate the essentials of life.
But now that our gadgets can multi-task as well as we can, there is no need for a cavernous bag and high street stores are predicting a rise in sales of smaller bags as a result.
So get ahead of the game, girls – the clutch bag is set for a comeback.
