This week there will be many a stressed-out mum or dad wandering the aisles of the supermarket muttering to themselves as they tot up the Christmas food and drink bill. But before you dismiss it as festive insanity, you might want to take a look at the latest scientific research.
According to a study, published in the Journal of Research in Educational Psychology, thinking out loud really does help to solve problems faster.
Researchers at the University of Granada in Spain discovered that a maths problem is more easily solved by talking through the problem.
Focusing on final year maths students, the scientists recorded the volunteers whilst trying to answer complex maths problems.
Those who went through the process out loud were better able to find the correct answer than those who kept their thoughts to themselves.
Professor Jose Luis Villegas Castellanos, who led the research, said that discussing a problem, or even drawing it, was the smart way to learn.
So if you're struggling to deal with the Christmas bills this year, don't suffer in silence... thinking out loud might just offer the solution.
