What woman doesn't want to lose a few pounds, have flawless skin or glossier hair? Well, the beauty industry would have us believe that the best way to look and feel great lies in eating and drinking a new range of 'miracle' products.Forget the humble probiotic yoghurt. These new 'nutricosmetics' as they are known, are enhanced with all kinds of health and beauty boosting ingredients.
And it seems no food is safe – and no claim too great.
How about sweets that eliminate wrinkles, anti-ageing jam or water that promises clear skin? Or starch-blocking coffee that will help you lose weight? Sounds like too much to swallow to us.
According to the Mail, the global nutri-cosmetic market has been valued at $1.5 billion by market research firm Kline & Company – and business is booming.
One of the latest products to appear in the UK is 'Eat Yourself Beautiful' marshmallows from Japan which are now available in Harvey Nics. They claim to boost your natural collagen levels, making skin thicker and bouncier and even reduce cellulite. Hmm.
There are also a host of drinks hitting the shelves, including Sip, a naturally flavoured water enriched with vitamins, minerals and plant extracts, which claims to improve skin.
Help: Clear Skin water contains a milk protein derivative called Praventin, which is meant to clear acne, while Skinny Water claims to increase fat-burning, block carbohydrate absorption and reduce sugar cravings.
Will you be spending your money on these new nutri-cosmetics or do you think they're just another expensive beauty con? Leave a message and let us know what you think...
