Young woman drinking bottled waterTypical. We've been ruthlessly clutching our bottles of Evian for years now, desperate to obtain a beautifully clear complexion.

But now, apparently, science has put the kibosh on the whole 'drink water, get beautiful skin' theory.

The British Nutrition Foundation claims that it's all the goodness of fruit and veg (plus a hint of sunscreen) that will give you that sought-after zit-free look.

In its Food For Skin report, the Foundation highlights a lack of studies that back up the popular misconception that water leads to a healthy glow.

Heather Yuregir, author of the report, told the Telegraph: "Just drinking water for the sake of drinking water really has no effect on improving the appearance of skin. It is just a common misconception."

In fact, it is vitamins A, B, C and E, all contained in a range of fruit and vegetables, that are crucial for keeping skin looking young and plumped.

Smoking and sun exposure are the culprits when it comes to the worst of skin ageing.

Mrs Yuregir added: "Fruit and veg can keep your skin functioning as it should and keep it looking healthy.

"And sun cream is really recommended to prevent the signs of ageing because the majority of the signs of ageing that appear on the skin are caused by sun damage."

So you can stop splashing out on bottled water now, girls... Mediterranean diet here we come.
