Get ready to sparkle! We reveal the hottest makeup trends for winter and explain how to wear this season's key looks for eyes and lips...

Get ready for '80s retro
In case you hadn't noticed, '80s style is back with a vengeance this season. To rock the retro trend while keeping your look up to date, opt for perfectly lined lips and coatings of hot pink lipstick.

Team muted matte finishes in attention grabbing colours with a lip liner of a matching shade. For a long-lasting finish, fill lips in with pencil to provide a base before applying lipstick. We love Yves Saint Laurent lipliner pencils, £14 each. Remember to keep eyes toned down when wearing bold lips.

A passion for purple
Mysterious and magical, the colour purple is big news this season, taking centre stage on the runways of Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Dior and Versace.

Purple eye shadow is the easiest way to rock the trend - and deep plum or sparkly amethyst eye shadow makes the perfect partner to black kohl-rimmed eyes, the other big eye trend of the season.

The big name cosmetic brands have all launched eye makeup in shades of berry, plum, mauve and violent violet this winter, but which shade of purple should you wear?

If you have blue or green eyes opt for light purple shades which, teamed with lashings of mascara, will give eyes real 'pop.' Smoky mauves and rich dark shades are the perfect complement to brown eyes.

Front Cover Eye Encyclopedia holds a gorgeous array of catwalk trends in ready to wear collections, £35 from Boots.

Goth goes grown up
The catwalks were awash with goth chic this season. Black lips were the signature style at Rachel Roy, Rodarte and Tuleh and MAC and Chanel have both brought out intense, black lipsticks for winter.

Admittedly, black lips are not the easiest trend to wear. If you're feeling daring, use a lip brush to paint on the colour, then lightly blot with a tissue, or try Clinique's Almost Lipstick Black Honey, £14 from Boots for a sheer, non-staining lip colour with a high gloss finish.

If black is a step too far, you can get a similarly strong look with deep brown or dark purple. Thankfully classic red lipstick, à la the golden days of Hollywood, is also bang on trend this season - and much easier to wear.

Smoky black, kohl-rimmed eyes are an easier goth trend to pull off. Look out for glittery black and midnight blue eyeliners to add extra sparkle and remember to add lashings of mascara for maximum effect.
