Brazil is known for its tiny bikinis, beaches and carnival excess, so we were surprised to read about the case of Geisy Arruda, a 20-year-old student who was expelled for wearing a mini-dress. Following a flood of intense criticism on the Internet, and support from Brazilian celebrities, Bandeirante University has now reversed its decision to expel her - a happy ending you would think.
Unfortunately, Arrunda is afraid to return to college after the incident, in which she was made to wear a professor's white coat to cover her short dress and was escorted away by police amid a hail of insults by students, some of whom shouted "whore."
Arruda said she was humiliated by the experience: "If a security guard or a professor had told me something I would have humbly returned home and changed my clothes," she told a packed press conference, accompanied by seven lawyers.
Brazil's national student union and minister in charge of women's policy were outraged by the incident and called for the university to explain why it had kicked her out.
The university claim that Arruda disrespected "ethical principles, academic dignity and morality." University lawyer Decio Lencioni said: "The problem is not her clothes," he said. "It's her behaviour, her attitude."
The university alleges that Arruda raised her dress and stopped to pose for photos - and also chose the longest way to get to class to attract the attention of more students.
Arruda vehemently denied the claim, saying, "It's a big lie that I raised the dress."
What do you think? Is expelling a woman for wearing a short dress an insult to women's lib - or is it time students dressed more modestly?
