VI PeelIf you think your skin could benefit from a chemical peel but the idea makes you feel faint, then this could be the answer.

Old style peels left you looking like a burns victim (remember Samantha's peel in Sex & the City?), and the downtime could run to weeks.

But times have changed, and so have peels. The VI Peel is much milder, but it's still a medical peel, rather than a treatment a beautician could perform. Plus it's suitable for black skin, unlike other chemical peels.

I talked it through with Dr Daniel Sister. It makes big claims, including improving skin tone and clarity, reducing age spots, sun damage and acne scars and stimulating collagen for a more youthful appearance. He assured me that I'd see great results.

The entire process only takes ten minutes. First your skin is prepared by being rubbed by acetone (yup the same stuff we use to remove nail varnish), this removes any oil from your skin. Then the peel solution is applied, it stings a little, but it's bearable. Then a layer of sun protection is applied. Once this is all dry you can apply make-up.

The next day I was a Jodie Marsh orange, but I was able to go out in public. By day three I'd started to peel. It was quite subtle at first (like the effects of sunburn), but soon my skin was really flaky and I hid indoors for two days.

However, a week later and I could really see the benefits. The fine lines around my eyes had reduced, the skin around my cheek bones was more taught and youthful looking, plus some scaring from teenage acne had almost vanished.

The VI Peel costs £300 and can be performed as a one-off treatment, or once every three months as an on-going programme.
